instrument_belongs_to_another_customer

HTTP 409, type conflict_error.

That card is already saved against a different customer.

Why it happened

A saved card belongs to one customer, and this one is already saved for someone else.

How to fix it

Use the card through the customer it is already saved for. A saved card belongs to one customer, so it cannot also be saved for this one: to charge this customer, save a different card for them with POST /payment_instruments from a checkout session they completed.

Retrying: do not retry the same request. It will not succeed. The fix is a different request: send it with a new Idempotency-Key, because this refusal happened after the key was claimed.

  • instrument_customer_mismatch -- a different operation: CREATING a subscription (POST /subscriptions) with a saved card that belongs to another customer. This page is about SAVING a card (POST /payment_instruments) that is already saved for another customer.
